Katanga Slum
|
"We know what real love is because Jesus gave up His life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters... Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth." 1 John 3:16, 18-19 NLT
We sat in the shack that belongs to a young girl of 14. A girl that sells her body to make ends meat to pay for twin boys she tries in the only way she knows to take care of. She is gone many nights working we think leaving the twins alone sometimes for days. Alone to play, talk, live, eat and to love each other in their own unique way. Alone at age 2 1/2 fighting for their lives, malnourished, neglected, unloved. These beautiful twin boys were found in their meager conditions, covered in urine, hungry and alone by two heartfelt Ugandan women that work for an organization that rescues sex trafficked girls. During their outreach in the Katanga slum that day looking for the young girl of 14 the twins were discovered. They knew that very moment that something had to be done for these precious boys or they would die in the slum.

As I sat scrunched so tightly in the shack piled high with the girls belongings, combs, brushes, lipstick, beer bottles, clothing and so much more I thought to myself, "How can anyone live this way. Where does she sleep, cook, eat, shower, go to the bathroom?" My heart felt her pain, her desperation, her lack of love and her life of poverty. It was not a life chosen by her, but a life that she had no choice to live.

Then I saw two big brown eyes in the doorway. A small boy that barely looked the age of 1 year old peaking into the shack. A frightened little boy that cried when he saw strangers. Cried because he was afraid of people, he was so used to being alone, only with his brother. His brother followed with the same frightened eyes, same condition, looking less than one year old. They are almost three years old. By looking at them and their thin small bodies I would have never guessed 3 years. I will never understand how two beautiful baby boys could live such a sad life. When they spoke in their Lugandan language I realized their age being much more than 1 year, they talked like 3 year olds, but cried like frightened babies. It was then and there I knew that God was performing His miracle. Before we went to the slum, the Ugandan women I spoke of earlier talked with their friend named Sirus. A man himself that grew up in the exact same slum. A man with a heart for children like Kato and Wasswa. A man that has taken in almost 50 children from this very slum, giving them a safe loving Christian home, his home, his organization that helps these wonderful, beautifully made children. Sirus agreed to take the twins into his loving Christian orphanage. To feed them, cloth them, love them. To share the love of Christ with them. With the help of my many loving friends from home I was able to help Sirus take in the twins by paying for medical care, food and clothing for the twins. I will also continue to give monthly support to help with expenses for the twins. This is all because of you, my friends, God's good and faithful servants who seed into God's calling, His purpose and financially help me help others. I believe that some of us are called to go onto the mission field to share His love, but others are called to sow into those who go. Thank you to those who have sowed into this mission God has called me to do.

My friends the story does not end here! I am so happy the Kato and Wasswa have a chance at a new life. A life full of love, God, education, food and more love. I will be visiting them often being part of the family that is teaching them God's love and providing for them. But let's go back to the shack in the slum where Kato and Wasswa were staying. The shack that belonged to the 14 year old girl. The girl who was using her body to help provide. A young girl who knew no other life than the slum. Today she is also living in a loving, Christian home that provides food, clothing, shelter, education and above all the love of God. She was rescued by the organization that helps sex trafficked girls. She has a chance now! She has an opportunity to live a life as God desires. To feel what true love is. She, today, also gave her life to Christ. A transformation that has started and will continue for her.
"For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have." 2 Corinthians 8:12
Give out of your heart. The love of Christ is more than enough if you are giving from your heart!
